I am a big fan of the Mark Hix restaurant group. I love Hix in Soho (which includes the fantastic bar downstairs which is respected in its own right – Mark’s Bar) as well as the simplicity of going to Tramshed for what is one of the best variations of ‘Chicken, Stuffing and Chips’ in what is also a very cool and relaxed environment.
Hix Mayfair is located within the Browns Hotel which is smart but comfortable. The table arrangement means you are definitely relaxed and feel like you have space within the large ground floor restaurant room located on Albemarle Street near Green Park.
The menu I would describe as ‘classic British’. The food is fairly simply prepared and lets the high quality ingredients speak for themselves. I’ve previously had a starter of just Samphire and Girolle mushrooms in garlic butter and I’ve been just as satisfied as I was when I had the wonderful starter during my most recent visit of Dressed Portland Crab as seen below.
The visit this time around was a business meeting and looking around the room it seemed as though the Mayfair location is perfect for a lunch meeting mid week due to the location and restaurant set up. There is also the added benefit of being located within the Browns Hotel where you could extend your meeting by having a coffee/cocktail in one of their other rooms if need be.
For mains I had a wonderful plate of Pan-fried Scallops with Parsnip crisps. They were tender and cooked to perfection.
We also had the Seabass with clams which was divine in a light seafood broth with braised celery.
Fish features a lot on the menu (which is by no means a criticism) – there’s a dedicated fish section after the starters and salads, followed by a ‘Meat and Game’ section which is equally British and features a good variety such as prime beef, deer, pork and pheasant etc.
Hix is suitable for a number of occasions, probably slightly on the smarter/more special occasion or business meeting side of things than just a casual pop in on the off chance. It’s well worth considering and adding to your list though if you haven’t been, or haven’t been for a while.
